What to Expect on the Start Yachting Course
Over two action-packed days, including an overnight stay aboard your yacht, you’ll immerse yourself in the sailing experience in the Solent. Here’s a preview of what the Start Yachting Course will look like:
Day 1
You’ll meet your friendly RYA instructor and fellow crew members. The day begins with a warm welcome, a thorough introduction to the yacht, and essential safety briefings. Then, it’s straight out onto the water! You will spend the majority of the day gaining hands-on experience:
- Learning essential sailing terminology
- Taking the helm and steering the boat
- Understanding basic ropework and boat handling
- Getting involved in hoisting and trimming sails
In the evening, you will experience an overnight stay on board in a marina or anchorage.
Day 2
You’ll continue to build on the skills you started mastering, gaining confidence and becoming increasingly comfortable with the yacht’s movements and handling. The focus will be on consolidating the basics in a relaxed environment. We aim to have you back in Hamble by the afternoon, encouraged by the new skills you’ve learnt.
This RYA course with Sail Squad is designed to create a relaxed atmosphere where learning is enjoyable. By the end of this immersive two-day experience, you will have a solid basic understanding of how a sailing yacht operates, feel significantly more confident on board, and proudly receive your official RYA Start Yachting Certificate!

The Start Yachting Course takes place in the Solent, a world-renowned sailing area located on the south coast of England, with our base in Port Hamble Marina.
Participants must be 12 years or older to take this RYA course. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Absolutely not! This course is specifically designed for complete beginners with no prior sailing experience whatsoever.
We limit the number of students on each yacht to 5 to ensure that everyone gets plenty of hands-on experience.
The price of £369 covers your 2-day, 1-night stay aboard our yacht with a qualified RYA Instructor, as well as all safety equipment, fuel, and mooring fees during the course. Upon successful completion, you will also receive the RYA Start Yachting certificate. Please note that main meals are not included in the price.
